Eleven Yamagata prefectural assembly members from Yonezawa City wore kimonos to the assembly.
Since 2008, it's been customary for elected councillors from Yonezawa, a Yonezawa silk textile production area, to attend the regular meeting in February every year in kimonos.
The history of Yonezawa textiles spans more than 420 years. It began in the Edo era when the feudal lord of Yonezawa had the women of samurai family learn weaving.
They are also said to have encouraged sericulture and invited weaving experts from Kyoto to develop the textile industry there.
