We celebrate the Doll Festival or Girl's Day on 3 March.
Families with young girls display a set of traditional Japanese dolls at home.
It's a very beautiful custom to display miniatures of the court's gorgeous women, musicians and furnishings, with dolls modelled on the emperor or crown prince and his consort on the Heian era.
In the run-up to the festival, events are organised to make handmade Hina dolls from scraps of kimono.
